Buckner Commits to Working to Improve Public Safety, Small Business Support in New Committees

Feb 1, 2023 | Buckner

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, will make strides improving public safety, supporting small businesses and promoting fiscal responsibility while serving on new House committees he has been named to.

“The roles I’ll take on these committees will only enable me to be a better voice for our community in Springfield. From Streeterville and Bronzeville to Woodlawn and South Shore, residents have been clear, we need safer streets, we need small business support, we need a budget that doesn’t mortgage our future and we need a healthcare system that accessible to everyone, regardless of their income,” Buckner said. “Whether due to financial challenges, public safety concerns or unforeseen medical needs, I will fight for a more stable future for everyone in my district who worries about what’s ahead. I believe these committee appointments position me to do exactly that.”

In past sessions, Buckner has played major roles fighting for public safety reforms to crack down on violent crime and create a more equitable law enforcement system. He also backed legislation to assist small businesses during the recent pandemic and recent economic downturn. Buckner’s committee assignments reflect that history of legislative achievement. Buckner will serve on the House General Services-Appropriations, where he is vice chair; Adoption and Child Welfare; Executive; Financial Institutions and Licensing; Judiciary-Civil; Judiciary-Criminal; and Revenue and Finance committees.

“In my role on the adoption and child welfare committee, I will also have opportunities to look into reforms of Illinois support systems for children without parents,” Buckner. “Kids in these situations need an advocate, and it is a privilege to take that up that mantle.”
