Rep. Buckner Holding Press Conference on Measure to Crack Down on Cold Cases

Feb 6, 2024 | Buckner

CHICAGO – State Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, will be holding a press conference covering his measure: the Homicide Victims’ Families Rights Act, which allows family members of cold case victims to seek new investigations, on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 9 a.m., at the TURN Center, 4444 South Evans Avenue in Chicago.

“Families of homicide victims deserve justice, and too often, that is denied to them,” Buckner said. “Over the years, our criminal justice system has grown to treat tragic murders, especially those involving Black and Brown Chicagoans, as impossible cases easily dropped at the first sign of difficulty. Victims and families of terrible crimes deserve, at the very least, substantive investigations, and this measure is a major step towards providing that.”

The press conference will focus on House Bill 1210, the Homicide Victims and Families Rights Act, which would allow the surviving family members of cold case victims to file an application to request a new investigation if it would result new investigative leads. It requires the person reviewing the application not have worked on the case in the past, and that the review must be completed within six months.
